Awards
1992 saw the first vintage of 2 ton of fruit which was awarded a bronze at the Royal Hobart Wine Show.
James Halliday :
In 2005 James Halliday in his "Wine Companion" awarded us with 5 glasses for our 2002 Shiraz, 4 1/2 glasses for both of our 2000 and 2002 Cabernet Sauvignons, and our 2002 Cabernet Merlot blend. He also rated us as one of the top 10 new wineries nationally and also the best winery in the Mount Benson Wine Region.
"An outstanding winery regularly producing exemplary wine"
Show Circuit :
The Wehl's Mount Benson label has received numerous medals over the years, starting with a bronze for the 1992 Cabernet Sauvignon at the Royal Hobart Show and including Siilver medals for the 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon at the Royal Melbourne wine show and for our 2002 Cabernet Merlot blend at the prestigious Limestone Coast Wine Show.
Winestate :
Winestate Magazine has continuously been good for us, starting in 1997 with the 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon being recognized as one of the top 5 wines for the year in it's class and the latest being our 2004 Shiraz and 2004 Cabernet Merlot blend both receiving 4 stars in the Limestone Coast Tasting November/December 2006 issue.
Shiraz comments included - "When you get sick of the jammy, alcoholic, overripe styles, come and enjoy these wines", or as the judges pointed out, "these are a legitimate alternative to the "blockbuster" Shiraz from the warmer regions".
The Cabernet blends had a comment of - "Generally a strong class- particularly the 2004's. Considering this was a warm and high-cropped year, the fruit quality was there to produce some very good drinking blends".
