Our Location :

Wehl's Mount Benson vineyard is situated 2 kilometres inland from the picturesque Wright Bay with an elevation of only 12 metres above sea level. The soils consist of a red sandy loam over an ancient seabed which has formed a porous limestone. Officially classed as a Terrarossa soil with very fine clays overlying the limestone base.

The vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc. All the varieties are used in the Wehl's range of wines.

Our Climate :

The Mount Benson region is classified as a Mediterranean climate with mild Winters and warm Summers, which are tempered by local sea breezes during the afternoons. Rain falls predominately during Winter and Spring with the occasional good rain during January and February.

The Viticulture :

Various pruning and canopy management techniques are used to utilise the climatic conditions of the region to achieve the quality required. Single wire trellis is used with the red varieties and a full hands on arch cane system is used with the Sauvignon Blanc to maximize airflow and reduce light exposure to the more vulnerable white grapes. All of the vines are dripper irrigated using limestone filtered bore water and irrigation scheduling is closely monitored and then applied only when necessary. Consistent summer sea breezes have the added bonus of providing the vines with a low humidity environment to thrive in..
